About Us

Atypical is a Kansas City–based melodic hard rock and alternative metal band known for heavy riffs, melodic hooks, undeniable energy, and versatile vocals that move between huge, powerful belts, intricate runs, and soft, almost delicate moments.

The band formed in June 2021 after a casual jam session at Robbie Pointer’s birthday party revealed an immediate creative chemistry. What started as a spontaneous night of music quickly grew into a shared vision for something much bigger. Atypical features Rachel Cartwright on lead vocals, Trevor Cartwright on vocals and guitars, Trevor Chowning on lead guitar, Robbie Pointer on bass, and Drake Ogle on drums.

Since forming, Atypical has shared stages with national acts including Crossfade, Red, Adelitas Way, Icon For Hire, Kingdom Collapse, Fivefold, and Plush, and was named Best Local Band by The Pitch KC in 2026. Their music has also reached listeners around the world, with breakout single “Prove You Wrong” surpassing 300,000 Spotify streams and reaching #1 on the Luxembourg iTunes Metal chart. Additional releases have charted internationally in Portugal, Spain, South Africa, and Mexico.

Recent singles “Above The Hate,” “Away From You,” and “We Are The Fire” show a heavier, more refined evolution of Atypical’s sound while keeping melody, emotion, and hope at the center of the music. Atypical is continuing to push forward with its sights set on bigger stages, major festivals, and bringing its live show to audiences far beyond Kansas City.
